[オランダ語]どんどん長くなる単語 / Endless Dutch word

オランダ語と出会ってから耳にタコができるほど聞いたlekkerという言葉

それが着々と落ち着いてきた頃

次に気づいたオランダ語の特徴…

単語が長い！！！

それはオランダ人の同僚がパソコン作業中に入力していた言葉

"seizoensgebonden menu" (意味:季節のコースメニュー)

長っ😳

言葉にせずにいられなかったです

たまたま目にした言葉ですが

これだけ長い単語が日常生活の中で使われているとは思いもしなかったので…

オランダ語絶対習わない！ともその時思いました😅

これがもう11年前の話でして

今では長い単語を目にして驚くこともないのですが

最近ふと彼と交わした会話

"一番長いオランダ語ってなんだろう🤔 "

調べると何個も出てくるのですがその中でも一番長いのを見つけました

なんと６０文字🤦🏻‍♀️

kindercarnavalsoptochtvoorbereidingswerkzaamhedencomitéleden

意味は、”子供のカーニバルパレード準備作業委員会メンバー”

他にも

• hypotheekrenteaftrek ＝ 住宅ローンの利子控除

• langeafstandsloper ＝ 長距離走者

• meervoudigepersoonlijkheidsstoornissen ＝ 多重人格障害

• bestuurdersaansprakelijkheidsverzekering ＝ 取締役の賠償責任保険

このなが〜い60文字のオランダ語を英語に訳すと

”children's carnival parade preparation work committee members”

7つの単語に分けられて訳されます

つまり元のオランダ語は短い単語の連なりで一つの言葉が成り立っていますが

それぞれの単語と単語がくっついて長い言葉ができています

私はリスニングをベースに外国語を学びますが

オランダ語で話された言葉をいざ書くとなると必ず出てくる疑問があります

”これって１つの単語？それとも2つ？”

実はこの疑問を投げかける会話、オランダ人同士でも交わされているのを耳にします😅

それほどオランダ語は難しい…

これらのオランダ語を日本語に訳していて気づいたことがもう一つ

日本語勉強するのってきっと難しいんだろうな…と。

母国語だからこそ簡単に読み書きでき、文面を見た時に単語と単語の区切りがわかりますが

日本語の語彙力や単語をあまり習得していない人からしたら

どれがそれぞれ一単語か判断しずらそうだなと感じました

ロックダウンを機に私の彼（ダーンさん）は”duolingo”( https://www.duolingo.com/ )というアプリを使って日本語を学んでいますが

日本語、なかなか難しい言葉だなと気付かされます

同じ単語でも、ひらがなカタカナ更に漢字でも表記でき、更には読みでも発音で意味が変わったりしますから覚える言葉がたくさんありますね…ダーンさんがんばれ😬 💦

私も同じアプリを使って英語•オランダ語•韓国語を学んでいますが

語学習得にはおすすめです！

幸い60文字から成るオランダ語は出てきてません笑

After hearing enough of "lekker", I have noticed something else about Dutch language.

Which is...

Dutch words are loooong!!

I happened to see one of my Dutch colleague typing in a word in computer; seizoensgebonden menu.

I couldn't help but say "Soooo....loooong 😧 "

I could't expect such a long word was used in Dutch language in daily use. So that moment, honestly, I said to myself I won't learn Dutch in future! 😅

That was 11 years ago and now that I understood more of Dutch words I don't get surprised by those loooong words in daily life anymore.

However my boyfriend and I happened to talk about this topic recently; "Actually,what's the longest Dutch word?🤔 "

You can find more than few example easily online and here's the longest I could found which contains 60 letters!!!!

"kindercarnavalsoptochtvoorbereidingswerkzaamhedencomitéleden"

and more as below

• hypotheekrenteaftrek = mortgage interest deduction

• langeafstandsloper = long distance runner

• meervoudigepersoonlijkheidsstoornissen = multiple personality disorders

• bestuurdersaansprakelijkheidsverzekering = directors' liability insurance

When you translate "kindercarnavalsoptochtvoorbereidingswerkzaamhedencomitéleden" into English;

”children's carnival parade preparation work committee members”

which contains 7 different words. With spaces between each words.

Now it's understandable some Dutch words are capable of compounding nouns, here comes next stage of question/doubt you'll face.

"Is it 1 word or 2 words???"

When you are listening Dutch words, it's much easier than writing them down. In fact, I even overheard native Dutch asking this question to each other! How difficult it is then for non-Dutch speaker!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ow, by the way, such a long words are not always compound of nouns. Such as meaning of "activity" in English is written "werkzaamheden". That's long enough of writing right 🤔

By translating these words into Japanese, I have noticed that there's also no spaces in each words! (Check the Japanese phrases above)

If you were non-Japanese speaker, I imagine it must be really difficult to figure out which of each is one single word.

Since the lockdown my boyfriend, Daan, has started to learn Japanese on app which called ”duolingo”( https://www.duolingo.com/ ). By seeing him learning, it really does make me realise how difficult it is to learn Japanese!

Imagine a single word can be written in 3 different character.

1) "Hiragana"

2) "Katakana"

3) "Kanji"(Chinese character)

Here's an example,

1) あめ

2) アメ

3) 雨

each of written words above are pronounced in same way and same meaning.

(meaning: rain // pronunciation: "ame")

Ow, surprise surprise! By changing the accent of pronunciation, "ame" can be meaning of "rain" or "candy"....... Well, good luck Daan👋🏻 😂

Currently I'm using the same app to study English, Dutch and Korean. And actually I do recommend this app for language leaners! It's been a great help in a short amount of time in a day to study.

Luckily there has not been a word contains 60 letters on this app YET!
