前回はオランダ人の彼が感じた

日本の食に対して思ったことを紹介しました

さて今回はカルチャー編です！

初来日は2016年

お互いの誕生日を祝いにバケーションで２週間日本へいきました

当時彼は24歳

生まれも育ちもオランダの彼ですが幼い頃から家族旅行でアメリカ、メキシコ、トルコ、インドネシアなど訪れてましたが東アジアに行くのは日本が初めて

何も見逃すまいと出発の1月前から２週間の予定をたてていきましたが

あそこ行きたい・見てみたいと彼が言い出すこともなく

下調べしている様子もなかったのを覚えてます…

（その後毎年のように日本へ行きましたが毎度何もリサーチせず😅 )

まぁその分、現地で感じるものの新鮮さが違うのも良い点ですね🤔

行った先は

大阪・京都・東京

いわゆる『初めて日本行くけどどこ行くべき？』って聞かれたら勧める答えるような都市

食べ歩きの大阪、歴史の京都、大都市東京とそれぞれ違った日本を見れましたが

各所を体験して彼が感じたカルチャーショックは4つ

① 高層ビル

彼の生まれ育ったハーレムも、今暮らすアムステルダムの街並みは古く

300年以上も前に建てられたものばかり

そんな街の中心を歩いていて

建物全体の姿は簡単に見られるのですが

日本の中心地は見上げてやっと建物上部が見えるものが多いですね

そんな高層ビルもホテルとオフィスが入っていたり

デパートや小売店、レストラン、アミューズメントだったりと

外見からは看板を見ない限り何が入ってるのかわからないのが面白いと言っていました

一度、外食をしにお店に向かうとき

西新宿のオフィス街にあるビルに入っていったことがあり、まさかこんなとこにレストランがあるとは気づきもしないと驚いていました

また、高層ビルから望む大都市の景色はなかなかのもの

二人の気に入っている展望台はSHIBUYA SKY(渋谷スカイ)です

私自身も長く日本から離れているからか

展望台からの景色はやはり圧巻で

懐かしさからいろんな感情が湧いてくるのを思えています

② 人の多さ

やっぱり人の多さに驚いていました

私も久しく帰ってないと平日でもこんなに人が多いのかとふと気付かされます

そんな街を行き交う人々の中

彼が好んだのはヒューマンウォッチング

スタバや代々木公園でのんびり過ごして行き交う人を見て楽しんでいました

一度、彼が数時間一人で過ごす機会がありましたがその時も

代々木公園で(たこ焼きを買って)

パフォーマーを見たり演劇の練習している人を見たり各々好きなことをして過ごしている人を見て時間を潰したそうです

③ 色

大阪の道頓堀や新宿のネオン

街を包む色の多さも特徴だったようです

日本に生まれ育っているとそれが『普段』の景色の一つとして過ごしていたので

言われてみると改めて気付かされました

中でも面白いと言っていたのが新宿東口のカラオケ館

カラオケしている人の様子が見れるのが面白かったようです

数年後、彼のご両親が来日した際にもわざわざ見せに行っていました😂

④ 音

そこらじゅうで街が音を発しているそうです

言われてみれば確かに…😲

• 信号機

• 空港のトイレの案内

• エレベーター

• ご飯屋さんやコンビニの入店

• 各駅違う駅のメロディー音

• 店内放送や案内…などなど

その中でも特に耐えられないと言っていたのが

BIG CAMERA

店内そこらじゅうにあるスピーカーやテレビ、割引やキャンペーンを案内する放送…

この体験を機にノイズキャンセリングイヤホンを買ってあげました😅

以上4つ、彼の初来日のカルチャーショックでした

日本に帰るたびいろいろなものの変化が見られて

さらに彼視点で『日本ならでは』を見られるのは面白いです

Previously I introduced "What my Dutch (chef) Boyfriend experienced first time in Japan: Food version"

This time I'm writing about city culture and his culture shock.

On 2016 was his first visit to Japan for two weeks.

At the time he was 24 years old. He had visited USA,Mexico,Turkey and Indonesia etc... Japan was his first visit to East Asia.

Although we planned a lot of things to do in two weeks vacation from months before, I cannot recall him saying 'I want to visit ... I want to see...'.

Well the positivity of this is that you'll have very fresh first impression when you'll be there. 🤔

At the time we have visited Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. I think it's very ordinary route for first visitor in Japan. The Japanese kitchen Osaka, history of Kyoto and the busy capital Tokyo.

And here's 4 culture shock things he experienced from the trip.

① Skyscraper

Unlike Amsterdam, when you step into the city center of Tokyo, you got to look up high to see the building. Or still cannot capture the top of building such like Skytree tower (634m high)!

Not only the hight of building was interesting but also what's inside. You might find difficult to figure out what's inside of those buildings. Some are mix hotel, office, fashion store, restaurant or even amusement area.

One day we were heading to restaurant for a dinner which was located in one of those skyscraper in office area (West-Shinjyuku), he was surprised and didn't expected to find restaurant from how the building looks from outside.

The view from observation platforms are very impressive in big city like Tokyo. One of our favourite skywalk is SHIBUYA SKY. It's located right next to the Shibuya Crossing and the 360 view is amazing to see. The view made me feel nostalgic.

② Population

Yes, people are everywhere!

It even surprise me every time we go back. The Tokyo prefecture has an estimated population of 13,960,236 in 2021.(wikipedia)

In such a place you can learn to enjoy Human Watching. He was also enjoying it at Starbucks or Yoyogi Park. One day when he had to spend couple of hours without me, he visited Yoyogi park, spent time watching people performing, practicing play or instruments or photoshoot etc..

③ Colors

Such as Doutonbori (Osaka) and Shinjyuku (Tokyo), the amount of colours covering the city was beyond expectation. For Japanese it's part of the city and part of normal view however it was interesting to notice how colourful they are.

It's not only the colour what's part of the city view, also people are. What especially intrest him was 'Karaoke-kan' in Shinjyuku. If you are lucky you can see people enjoying karaoke from outside of the building. Just having fun jumping and dancing. In fact, in later years he showed it to his parents when they first visited Japan too.😂

④ Sounds

'The city is talking to me'

Well.... that's true actually... 😲

• traffic lights

• at airport guiding the way to toilet

• elevators

• entrance of restaurants and convenience stores

• different melody sounds on each train station

• announcement in stores

• vending machines

It's literally 'The city is talking to me' feeling. Each of them are mostly an announcement for sale prices in store or their brand songs they use of commercial. Especially if you have visited in BIG CAMERA (electronic store), you'll experience the most of it. It's literally surrounded by robots and technology. And since this experience I bought noise canceling earphone for him and that really helped a lot apparently.

As above all, as much as my boyfriend's culture shock for his first visit in Japan had gave me an interesting view to myself too. It was an eye opening experience for me to notice how Japan is being seen by foreigner. And it has always been interesting trip for us to visit Japan every time.
