オランダに来て感じたカルチャーショックと

それらから学んだことをいくつかご紹介します

10年経ってもまだ慣れないものもいくつか…

ところで…

小学生の頃、永遠のように感じた２学期だったのに

この10年(現在11年目)の時の速さは信じられない😨

① 公共交通機関を利用した移動の計画は時間に余裕を持つこと

これ、きっと世界のどこでも通用することだと思いますが…

オランダ国内の移動やバケーションで訪れた諸外国の電車やバスを利用して思ったことです

そしてやっぱり時間に正確な日本は凄いと実感しました

日本は時刻表通りに電車やバスが来て

1分の遅延でも遅れを詫びる車内放送が流れますね

11年前オランダに来たばかりの頃はそれこそ時間通りにこない電車やバスが目立っていた印象ですが、ここ5年くらいで少し改善されたように感じます

それでも急に電車が動かなくなって運行停止になったり

15分、20分の遅延が起きることも珍しく無いので旅の計画は万全に🙏🏻

あまりにも珍しい出来事では無いので

オランダ人も遅刻の理由に”電車が…”とさらっと嘘をつくことも多々あります😂

② 傘ささないから禿げてる人多いんだ

と思っていました。

酸性雨が禿げる原因の一つだと考えてましたので

あまりにも傘をささないオランダ人と頭皮の薄いオランダ人の多さには関連性があると思っていました🙈

まず、傘を持ち歩く人をあまり見かけません

オランダは一年を通して約193日雨が降っている国です

よっぽど晴れて太陽が出ている日や雪が降ったり運河が凍るような天気予報以外は

だいたい厚い雲で覆われた曇りの日なのでわざわざ天気予報を気にすることも減りました

私はそれでも傘を利用するので

今となっては雲の様子を見るとなんとなーく雨降る雲か降らない曇りなのかわかるようになりました😂

一方オランダ人は、レインコートを来ている人も見かけますが、そうでない人はずぶ濡れになって目的地まで雨の中歩いてる人も珍しくありません

"水も滴るいい男"とも言いますが、私は傘を持って身なりを気にするジェントルメンのが好みです🤷🏻‍♀️

③ 自分の誕生日はケーキ持参

そうなんです。誕生日の人がケーキ持参するんです。

これには本当に驚きました

仕事場にケーキを同僚の人数分持っていって

仕事の合間や始業前にコーヒーやお茶と一緒にケーキを食べるんです

そして『誕生日会に招かれたら、まず天気の話をしましょう』

オランダ人の誕生日会は大体週末に行われます

リビングに招かれたらまず目にするのが大量の椅子の数

円形に並べられた椅子と無駄にある中央の広いスペース

ホスト(誕生日の人)を始め招待された人みんなに『おめでとう』と一言挨拶し頬にキスまたは握手する（ぐるりと並べられた椅子を一周したら挨拶し終わり笑）

椅子に座りお茶とケーキを頂いて天気のお話をします😅

というのも、お誕生日の人が家族、学校や職場の友人を招いてるわけですからそれほどみんなお互いを知っているわけではないんです。なのでまずは無難にお天気の話から…という意味です🤪

④ 子供が産まれたらラスクを振る舞う

赤ちゃんが産まれたら家族•友人や職場にBirth Cardというものが送られます

そこには誰がパパママで、赤ちゃんの名前と体重と誕生日(時間)が書かれてあります

赤ちゃんが産まれた後家族や友人がお家に来たときや、パパとママが産休後初出勤する日、ラスクを振る舞うのが伝統なのです

丸いラスクの上にはバターとアニス味のトッピングが乗せてあり

産まれた赤ちゃんが男の子なら青、女の子ならピンクのトッピングを使います

会社によってはママとパパが、それぞれの職場に行って同僚皆んなに子供のお披露目をすることもあります

⑤ セサミストリートにビックバードはいない？！

セサミストリートを見て育った者としてこれは衝撃的で未だに納得いかないことなのですが、オランダのセサミストリートのメンバーにビックバードは存在しないんです！

これが判明したのは彼との何気ない会話

私が、『セサミストリートのビックバードがさぁ…』と話し始めて言われた一言

(彼)『ぁぁ、ピノね』

…

……

………😟 『ぇ、なんつった？誰それ？違う違う。ほら黄色い大きな鳥！』

(彼)『あー。従兄弟のヤンね！』

…

……😫 『いや、誰だよそれ！笑』

いやぁ…衝撃的でした。

なんつったってビックバード以外全員同じなんですもの

なんでビックバードだけ笑

これには納得いかず思わずGoogleで調べました

“ピノ(Pino)は1976年から登場しているキャラクターらしいのですが（私の記憶にピノはいない）

彼は精神年齢4歳での青い鳥で、幼くていろんなことに興味がある好奇心旺盛な性格

一方のビックバードはピノの従兄弟だそうで、オランダでは”Neef Jan”(従兄弟のヤン)と呼ばれている”

小さい頃から見て育ったものの記憶が覆されるのはかなりの衝撃です😳

My culture shock experience in Holland

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do"

It all started as culture shock and yet there are some things I still haven't get used to yet. Let me share my culture shock experience this time!

① "Well prepare your travel time when it comes to public transport"

I believe you can say this to any country you visit but especially experiencing the living of foreign country, it made me realised how amazingly punctual Japan is!

In Japan, you will normally hear the apology announcement in a train or bus even for 1minute behind the schedule.

I can say, compare to 11years ago, punctuality of public transport in Holland has improved. Yet you still can expect delay of +15minutes or more easily. Sometimes you must step out of the train due to sudden technical issue.

I also noticed people are saying that they got late due to train delay (whether it's true or not😂 )

② "no umbrella = no hair"

At least that's what I was thinking noticing quite a lot of men without hair.... I always thought acid rain is one of the cause to loosing hair 🙈

Anyhow, you barely see Dutch local people walking with an umbrella.

When it comes to forecast, about 193 days are rain through year in Holland. I believe people are more interested in information as when sunny days are, when we expect snow or when the canals gets frozen.

Longer my Dutch life gets, more easier to estimate if it'll be rain or not by seeing the clouds😂 Basically I can not bare my shoes and clothes getting wet so I carry around an umbrella more often than Dutch people. On the other hand locals are just walking under the rain without an umbrella. Maybe it's too often that we get rainy days, maybe it's too windy? At least my boyfriend says he doen't like umbrella. And I'm like what🙄?

③ "Dutch birthday for DUMMIES"

Step 1 : Bring your own birthday cake

To celebrate your birthday with others, you must bring your cake. Well, that was honestly one of the big culture shock I experienced. People brings enough cakes for your colleague at work and have coffee with it. Meaning, more team member you have, more cakes you'll probably get through the year!

Step 2 : Gather around as circle and talk about the weather

If you were to get invited to someone's birthday party, the very first thing you'll notice is the huge amount of chairs in living room placed as a circle.

Then you got to go around the chairs and give a kisses or hand with a word "Gefeliciteerd" (Congratulation) to all people who were invited to the party. After then you'll get to offer a piece of cake with a coffee or tea, get seated on one of the chair. Now it's time to talk about the weather!

Kidding...but true! 😅

Most of those parties are gathering of people whom the family or friends of the birthday person so not a lot of them are knowing well about each other. So "talking about weather" is sort of (because they really do talk about it!) figure of speech, people just tries to break the ice and get to know each other.

④ "Greet people with rusk when you get a baby"

When one of your family, friend or colleague gets a baby, you will receive "birth card" which says the name of the baby, weights and birth day(time). Then you most probably visit them or you'll meet the father or mother at work after back from their maternity leave. That's the moment you'll be having Dutch rusk with bread toppings!

The topping is called "muisjes" and it the colour blue or pink represent the gender of new born baby. It has an anise flavour.

Depends on the company culture you might expect Not too long after that, the baby in a stroller shows up at work with Papa & mama. That's how greeting party starts suddenly on your working day.

⑤ "There's no yellow bird in Sesame Street"

In fact, it is very hard to accept; something you've grown up as a child is not a common information world wide. It's about THE Yellow Bird, very remarkable one on Sesame Street......

I happened to figured this out when talking with my boyfriend.

When I said "You know the Big bird in Sesame Street right?"

Then he goes "Yeah, Pino!"

…

……

………(me) 😟 "eh? Wha..what did you say? Who?? I meant THE yellow big bird."

(He) "AH！The neef Jan!"

…

……(me) 😫 "woooooow now I'm totally lost here !"

I really had to google this matter.

"Pino has been a part of the Sesame Street since 1976. He is a large blue bird that represents the psychological age of four year old. He is always cheerful and eager the learn new things, and he is best known for his funny laugh and his catchphrase "Echt waar?!"(Really?!)".

For a while Big Bird was named Pino in merchandise, but after many confusing name mixups he became Pino's cousin. Big Bird's Dutch name is Neef Jan; Cousin John in English"

I was surprised that the Sesame Street was Dutch co-production. It is interesting to match the memory of your childhood with other culture's one. It certainly brings some surprise. 😳 For other example; Pokemon. I was surprised that the main character is called "Ash", whom called "Atsushi".
